Megalopolis (15)

Megalopolis is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. From Director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now), this passion project is nearly 50 years in the making.

The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare.

Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.

The film also stars an eclectic supporting cast, including the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman and Kathryn Hunter.

Joker: Folie à Deux (15)

From acclaimed writer/director Todd Phillips comes Joker: Folie À Deux, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker. The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born).

Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.

The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

As both an award-winning film and a box office smash, Joker changed the face of the comic book movie, with a focus on character over action. With Joker: Folie À Deux, the incorporation of musical elements and the casting of pop music legend Lady Gaga is sure to make this an unmissable new entry into the genre in its own right.

Fright Night: Nosferatu + Live Re-Score (PG)

Sprechen music presents a new way of seeing F. W. Murnau’s silent horror classic Nosferatu with a reimagined sound-track mixed live by Chris Massey and Richie V featuring music by the likes of Teeth Of The Sea, Tangerine Dream, Ambienti Coassiali, Fuck Buttons, Sunno & Boris, Prins Thomas, Cristobal Tapia De Veer, Pendle Coven, Carlton Melton, Ulver, Claudio Simonetti & more…

"The original Dracula movie and still, after 100 years, the scariest. If the film is not called ‘Dracula’, that is simply because Murnau and his screenwriter, Henrik Galeen, having failed to obtain the rights to Bram Stoker’s novel from his widow, calmly pinched the whole plot and changed the characters’ names. The resultant lawsuit rumbled on for years.

"Still, this piece of sharp practice can perhaps be forgiven, since it resulted in one of the greatest horror movies, not just of the silent screen, but of all time. The special effects, of course, have long since been surpassed, the dialogue is often stilted, and some of the acting especially Gustav von Wangenheim as the naïve young hero, Hutter – is hammy in the extreme. But none of this matters in the face of what makes this a masterpiece: Murnau’s visionary direction and the chilling performance of Max Schreck in the title role… Filming largely on location, Murnau creates an eerie sense of unnatural forces penetrating the natural world; the uncanny is all the more terrifying for appearing in everyday surroundings… The Nosferatu of Max Schreck is unforgettably grotesque from his very first appearance… Tall, cadaverous, bald, bat-eared and rabbit-toothed, he moves with short jerky steps, taloned hands close to his sides, as if still holding the shape of his daytime coffin." Silent Men (18)

Director Duncan Cowles takes us on a journey through male mental health, stigma and taboo in the UK.

Part road trip, part coming-of-middle-age tale, Cowles’ laconic humour and frank approach to his subject proves effective in exploring aspects of masculinity that all too often are little discussed. Admitting that he is not always open and intimate in his conversations with loved ones, the BAFTA-winning Scottish filmmaker sets out to define masculinity in the modern age – what makes men tick and, more importantly, coming to terms with all aspects of health, both physical and mental. The questions asked in Silent Men may seem simple, but their answers betray underlying tensions, as Cowles’ subjects make all too clear. The film grapples with being able to express oneself as a man – to become someone at peace with themselves, their life and the ones they love.

Content Guidance: Film contains discussions about suicide.

Fright Night presents Broken Bird + Director Q&A

Directed by Joanne Mitchell.

Joanne has skilfully turned her 2018 award-winning short SYBIL (original story Tracey Sheals) into a rich, absorbing and disturbing tale about a quiet soul in emotional turmoil. Sybil Chamberlain works as a professional mortician at a funeral parlour. She has spent her life looking for love. Brought up as a privileged, carefree child, at the age of ten, she lost everything in a tragic accident. A darkness fell over her as the bright lights of her life were snuffed out swiftly and cruelly. Now, an emptiness, an aching loneliness prevails, a gloomy void she seeks to fill. Reality and reason are slipping away from Sybil, and her dark desires are becoming more insatiable and progressively out of control. Will she ever find happiness and contentment, especially as the company she keeps is mainly deceased?

Rebecca Calder masterfully portrays Sybil in a riveting, nuanced interpretation of the complex character’s quirky, unsettling behaviour. See how Joanne Mitchell has honed her craft as a horror storyteller, capturing all and maintaining a firm grip on performance, story, and style to deliver the most beautifully creepy rendition of a tormented mind spiralling into a vortex of madness.

Blitz (12A)

In the face of nightly air raids, East End mum Rita (yet another impressive turn by Saoirse Ronan) grows increasingly worried about her son George’s safety. Under the counsel of her father, Gerald (Paul Weller), she makes the heart-wrenching decision to send him to the countryside. But a few hours into his journey, George alights the train, determined to return to Stepney Green and his family. Friends and foes stalk London’s streets, but each encounter populates George’s map of his world, giving him an understanding of how his fellow citizens are affected by these tumultuous times.

McQueen’s incredible ensemble cast includes Kathy Burke, Benjamin Clémentine, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham. They inhabit a war-torn London that’s impeccably realised by Adam Stockhausen’s (12 Years a Slave, Asteroid City) production design and Yorick Le Saux’s (A Bigger Splash, Irma Vep) cinematography, while Hans Zimmer’s score revels in the scale and intimacy of the director’s vision. But the film’s trump card is newcomer Elliott Heffernan, who captures George’s emotional strength, impish humour and sense of loyalty to his family with a wisdom beyond his years. Through him, McQueen’s Blitz represents one of the finest portrayals of life in a moment of crisis, perseverance and renewal.
