Home Ground (12A)

Home Ground – a story of connection, community and a love of the beautiful game

When Arsalan first arrived in Halifax he was eager to find connection and community in an unfamiliar country. As an avid football fan, he braved the freezing January temperatures and headed to the local stadium where a random act of kindness gave him his first glimmer of hope for a happy life in the UK. This documentary film tells Arsalan’s story, from the young boy who dreamed of becoming a footballer to his role with St Augustine’s Centre helping others seeking sanctuary.

The film also follows members of St Augustine’s FC and explores their lives as people seeking asylum in this country. It examines the critical role that football plays in supporting the team to navigate a complex and often hostile asylum system, and provides a heartwarming insight into how the team helps players to find a home and community in a new country.

Misericordia (15)

The teasingly entwined ambiguities of love and death continue to fascinate Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake), who returns with a sharp, sinister, yet slyly funny thriller.

Set in an autumnal, woodsy village in his native region of Occitanie, his latest follows the meandering exploits of Jérémie (Félix Kysyl), an out-of-work baker who has drifted back to his hometown after the death of his beloved former boss, a bakery owner.

Staying long after the funeral, the seemingly benign Jérémie begins to casually insinuate himself into his mentor’s family, including his kind-hearted widow (Catherine Frot) and venomously angry son (Jean-Baptiste Durand), while making an increasingly surprising—and ultimately beneficial—friendship with an oddly cheerful local priest (Jacques Develay).

In Guiraudie’s quietly carnal world, violence and eroticism explode with little anticipation, and criminal behaviour can seem like a natural extension of physical desire. The French director is at the top of his game in Misericordia, again upending all genre expectations.

One to One: John & Yoko (15)

On August 30, 1972, in New York City, John Lennon played his only full-length show after leaving The Beatles, the One to One Benefit Concert, a rollicking, dazzling performance from him and Yoko Ono.

Director Kevin Macdonald’s riveting documentary One to One: John & Yoko takes that epic musical event and uses it as the starting point to recreate eighteen defining months in the lives of John and Yoko.

By 1971 the couple was newly arrived in the United States— living in a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village and watching a huge amount of American television. The film uses a riotous mélange of American TV to conjure the era through what the two would have been seeing on the tube: the Vietnam War, The Price is Right, Nixon, Coca-Cola ads, Cronkite, The Waltons.

As they experience a year of love and transformation in the US, John and Yoko begin to change their approach to protest — ultimately leading to the One to One concert, which was inspired by a Geraldo Rivera exposé they watched on TV. Filmed in a meticulously faithful reproduction of the NYC apartment the duo shared, One to One: John & Yoko also includes a wealth of never-before-seen material, including home movies and numerous phone call recordings of John and Yoko to offer a unique take on a seminal time in the lives of one of music’s most famous couples.

Wind, Tide & Oar (PG)

Wind, Tide & Oar is a compelling exploration of engineless sailing, shot on analogue film over three years. The film delves into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements alone, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation.

Journeying through rivers, coastlines, and open seas, spanning the UK, the Netherlands, and France, Wind, Tide & Oar creates a contemplative space, addressing themes of ecology, heritage, traditional skills, and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, Wahl offers a poetic and intimate perspective on a millennia-old craft, upended by the invention of mechanised power.

Through the film’s reveries, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment. It invites deep reflection on our relationship with nature, our understanding of and commitment to sustainability, and our care for the world around us.

Exhibition on Screen: Michelangelo – Love and Death (PG)

The spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us, but what do we really know about this Renaissance giant? Michelangelo’s genius is evident in everything he touched.
