A Different Man (15)

Aspiring actor Edward (Sebastian Stan) undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.

This darkly funny and surreal thriller is another brilliant collaboration between writer-director Aaron Schimberg and actor Adam Pearson (Under the Skin) following 2019’s Chained for Life, with shades of David Lynch and Charlie Kaufman whilst being wholly unique.

A Different Man was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival and Sebastian Stan won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance. Co-starring Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World).

The Room Next Door (12A)

Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) are two old friends having worked at the same trendy New York magazine in their youth. Having lost touch, Ingrid is now an established novelist and Martha, a war journalist, are brought back together when Martha, suffering from cervical cancer asks Ingrid to be by her side at the end.

Compelled to Martha’s side, Ingrid begins to reconnect with her through their reflection of their missed years together and their relationship with their shared ex (played by John Turturro). Their bond forms whilst recalling Martha’s fractured relationships with her daughter and her experiences as a war journalist. Seeking companionship and comfort from an old friend at the end of her life and looking to escape the agony of the final days of terminal cancer, Martha asks Ingrid to be with her when she takes a euthanasia pill, ending her suffering.

Following it’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it picked up the Golden Lion award, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film (and his first in English language) is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel ‘What Are You Going Through’, bringing together two powerhouse performers in Swinton and Moore, underpinned by the director’s usual striking visuals and rich, emotive storytelling.

Timestalker (15)

Agnes repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, gets reincarnated a century later, before meeting him again and starting the cycle anew. It is one story told over many periods, all with the messy thrills and spills that come with daring to follow your heart. Or maybe your loins... Agnes’ only hope in avoiding this violent fate is by finally reaching spiritual enlightenment; but how can she ever wise up when she’s destined to be a fool for love? Some lessons are just too hard to learn in one lifetime.

The sophomore feature from Prevenge director and Sightseers star Alice Lowe is an inventive historical-romantic-comedy-adventure with a unique point of view.

“Somewhere between Monty Python and Sally Potter’s Orlando (1992), Timestalker is above all else distinctly Loweian, and consolidates the filmmakers place as one of the most dazzling and exciting British filmmakers working in the indie genre space today.” – Alexandra Heller-Nicholas

Written, directed by, and starring Alice Lowe

The Parkinsons Project (12A)

The Parkinsons Project follows climber and teacher, Chris Hamper, as he navigates his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

His Parkinson's diagnosis has forced him to redefine his passion for climbing. His tremor makes tying knots and clipping gear difficult; his lack of dopamine reduces the reward and motivation process, forcing Chris to find new ways to stay inspired. And yet, once he is on the rock, climbing appears to be one of the very few activities that minimise his symptoms.

Now, eight years after his diagnosis, Chris is potentially coming to the end of the “honeymoon” period of his Parkinson’s. This means he could start to see the effects of the disease more acutely, including the impact it may have on his ability to continue climbing. Knowing this, Chris has taken early retirement from teaching to climb as much as possible around his home in Norway and with friends in Sheffield.

The Crime Is Mine (15)

Paris in the 1930s — a playground for industrial heirs and debonair architects, but the City of Lights does not shine evenly for all.

Struggling actress Madeleine and her best friend Pauline, an unemployed lawyer, live in a cramped flat and owe five months’ rent.

Opportunity knocks after a lascivious theatrical producer who made an inappropriate advance towards Madeleine turns up dead. Madeleine stands trial for murder and ascends to decadent stardom, with Pauline serving as defence counsel and media circus ringmaster. A new life of fame, wealth, and tabloid celebrity awaits — until the truth comes out.

Adapted from a 1934 play by Georges Berr and Louis Verneuil, and featuring a supporting cast including Isabelle Huppert, Dany Boon, and Fabrice Luchini, The Crime Is Mine is a rollicking farce and scabrous satire with a wily feminist edge from one of French cinema’s most chameleonic stylists, François Ozon.

Silent Men (18)

Director Duncan Cowles takes us on a journey through male mental health, stigma and taboo in the UK.

Part road trip, part coming-of-middle-age tale, Cowles’ laconic humour and frank approach to his subject proves effective in exploring aspects of masculinity that all too often are little discussed. Admitting that he is not always open and intimate in his conversations with loved ones, the BAFTA-winning Scottish filmmaker sets out to define masculinity in the modern age – what makes men tick and, more importantly, coming to terms with all aspects of health, both physical and mental. The questions asked in Silent Men may seem simple, but their answers betray underlying tensions, as Cowles’ subjects make all too clear. The film grapples with being able to express oneself as a man – to become someone at peace with themselves, their life and the ones they love.

Content Guidance: Film contains discussions about suicide.

Anora (18)

Sean Baker won the Palme d’Or at Cannes with this enthralling drama, featuring a star-making performance from Mikey Madison.

English + Russian, Armenian with English Subtitles

Baker (Florida Project, Red Rocket) presents a modern-day Cinderella story about Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meeting Vanya, a spoiled son of a Russian oligarch, who offers her a glamorous new life of possibility and incredible wealth. Ani’s wild ride and fairytale is soon threatened when news of their whirlwind marriage gets back to Russia, resulting in Vanya’s parents flying to New York to manage the situation.

Both wildly entertaining and heartbreaking, Anora takes audiences on a freewheeling, rambunctious adventure that escalates to dizzying levels. Drawing comparisons to Pretty Woman, it constantly plays with genre and audience expectations. But what shines through most, as in all his films, is Baker’s love for and unwillingness to judge his characters.

Blitz (12A)

In the face of nightly air raids, East End mum Rita (yet another impressive turn by Saoirse Ronan) grows increasingly worried about her son George’s safety. Under the counsel of her father, Gerald (Paul Weller), she makes the heart-wrenching decision to send him to the countryside. But a few hours into his journey, George alights the train, determined to return to Stepney Green and his family. Friends and foes stalk London’s streets, but each encounter populates George’s map of his world, giving him an understanding of how his fellow citizens are affected by these tumultuous times.

McQueen’s incredible ensemble cast includes Kathy Burke, Benjamin Clémentine, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham. They inhabit a war-torn London that’s impeccably realised by Adam Stockhausen’s (12 Years a Slave, Asteroid City) production design and Yorick Le Saux’s (A Bigger Splash, Irma Vep) cinematography, while Hans Zimmer’s score revels in the scale and intimacy of the director’s vision. But the film’s trump card is newcomer Elliott Heffernan, who captures George’s emotional strength, impish humour and sense of loyalty to his family with a wisdom beyond his years. Through him, McQueen’s Blitz represents one of the finest portrayals of life in a moment of crisis, perseverance and renewal.

Fright Night Presents: Broken Bird (18)

Fright Night presents Broken Bird + Director Q&A

Directed by Joanne Mitchell.

Joanne has skilfully turned her 2018 award-winning short SYBIL (original story Tracey Sheals) into a rich, absorbing and disturbing tale about a quiet soul in emotional turmoil. Sybil Chamberlain works as a professional mortician at a funeral parlour. She has spent her life looking for love. Brought up as a privileged, carefree child, at the age of ten, she lost everything in a tragic accident. A darkness fell over her as the bright lights of her life were snuffed out swiftly and cruelly. Now, an emptiness, an aching loneliness prevails, a gloomy void she seeks to fill. Reality and reason are slipping away from Sybil, and her dark desires are becoming more insatiable and progressively out of control. Will she ever find happiness and contentment, especially as the company she keeps is mainly deceased?

Rebecca Calder masterfully portrays Sybil in a riveting, nuanced interpretation of the complex character’s quirky, unsettling behaviour. See how Joanne Mitchell has honed her craft as a horror storyteller, capturing all and maintaining a firm grip on performance, story, and style to deliver the most beautifully creepy rendition of a tormented mind spiralling into a vortex of madness.

Bird (15)

Young Bailey feels caged in her Gravesend squat home.

Reckless, wannabe drug dealer dad Bug plans to marry his new girlfriend.

Older brother Hunter plots to elope with his underage partner.

Meanwhile, across town, Bailey’s near-feral younger siblings are menaced by her mum’s new and violent lover. Small wonder she’s intrigued by the enigmatic Bird, a flighty free spirit searching for his own roots. Arnold once again displays her wondrous ability to infuse coming-of-age stories focused on marginalized lives with uncompromising grit and a sensual connection to nature.

The pulsating soundtrack and lived-in performances (newcomer Adams is a standout) are perhaps expected. But Bird also sees Arnold pushing in new directions, incorporating not just social, but magical realism – an unexpectedly transformative addition that helps her wild, shapeshifting film soar.
